Let’s face it: laser hair removal is not cheap. Throughout the United States, the average laser hair removal price for one laser treatment ranges between $400 and $450 per session. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average laser hair removal cost is about $430 per procedure.

Factors Influencing Laser Hair Removal Costs

The actual price of laser hair removal can vary significantly based on a number of factors including the size of the area that is treated, the number of sessions that are needed, amount of time the various sessions take and the kind of laser being used.

As everyone’s pattern of hair growth is unique, the price of laser hair removal varies from person to person. There are different factors involved, and you have to decide, whether the laser hair removal is for you. Price depends on which body part you are having done, the amount of hair you wish to have removed, and color of hair you want removed. Other factors that play a role are your geographic location, the level of experience of the laser removal professional, and the type of payment you choose (certain discounts may be offered to those who pay in advance).

Usually, only two to four treatments are needed to effectively remove hair because laser hair removal is capable of affecting hundreds of hair follicles at one time. Call around to your local clinics to get some idea of how many treatments you’ll need, which will determine your total cost.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average price of laser treatments in the United States is $429. In most cases, the smaller the surface area to be treated, the lower the treatment cost.

On average, the cost of laser hair removal in the smaller, bikini area is between $300 and $500. On the other hand, the cost of treating a larger area, such as the back, averages between $500 and $900 per treatment session. Treatment of the chest may cost between $300 and $650. For the upper and lower legs, you can expect to spend from $600 to $850 while the arms, will cost only $350 to $500. The underarms are the cheapest area to treat, with a cost range of $200 to $350. Removing facial hair and hair from the neck is more expensive, with prices from $400 to $900 per treatment.

Laser Hair Removal Cost: Pricing Structure

Laser hair removal cost calculation method may be different for different clinics, but the good news is that regardless of the cost structure used to develop the laser hair removal price list, the dollar figure for the completed treatment will generally come out about the same. So, when visiting a laser hair removal clinic for your initial consultation, always ask for a price quote for the completed laser hair removal treatments.

Here are some methods that laser hair removal clinics use to calculate the price of laser hair removal:

Flat Fee Basis
You may be charged a flat fee per session or set of sessions, for example, $600 for back hair removal.

Time
Some laser clinics bill per 15 minute segment of time, for example, $150 per 15 each minutes of the procedure. So, if a man’s back takes about an hour, it would cost $600 per treatment. Of course, the time needed will be affected by the amount of hair to be removed, the speed of the laser machine and the skill of the professional doing the work.

Fee per pulse
This cost structure is based on how many pulses it takes to remove hair from a selected area. Every time the laser fires, it is called “a pulse.” Each pulse takes can remove up to about a hundred hairs from a spot as big as a dime to a quarter. For instance, a laser clinic might charge a two dollars per pulse, so if you are removing upper lip hair and it takes 50 pulses that would be $100. Of course, larger areas are going to take more pulses to attain the desired hair removal. In the case that a treatment center charges per pulse, there may be a minimum pulse fee regardless of how many pulses it takes to remove the hair. You will only get billed for actual pulses, so the cost per session may go down as you have less hair to be removed. Different lasers have different firing area sizes so the price per each pulse will vary.

Although the methods that laser hair removal clinics calculate the price of laser hair removal vary, the overall cost usually comes out to be the similar for the same type of treatment.

Important Considerations

Remember, most of the time, it takes more than one treatment to achieve the hair removal. This is the most important thing to remember in terms of cost. Having a consultation appointment is also the best way to determine the costs for laser hair removal, as there is no universal guideline for cost, and it often depends on the treatment center and area, types of cost structures and time involved.

The main reason laser hair removal prices are so high is that it’s a procedure that should be performed in a physician’s office or in select clinics that are licensed to operate the Class II medical device. In some states, it is legal for a non-medical person to be trained to use a laser, which can lower laser hair removal cost. But especially since not all types of lasers can be used on everybody, you’re better off paying the additional cost to work with a physician who is a certified laser hair removal specialist.

Be sure to carefully research the various options available in your area and ask many questions before you choose a clinic. Also, make sure you have a realistic price estimate BEFORE you start your treatment. That means discussing with the clinician how many treatments you’ll likely need. That is why it is a good idea to sign up for a consultation to have your questions answered and discuss the pricing. The key here is to eliminate any surprises after the treatments are done!

Keep in mind that most insurance companies do not cover laser hair removal cost, because the procedure is cosmetic in nature. Also, remember that price for laser hair removal is not the only factor to consider. QUALITY of service is very important too.

Lasers were first used for dermatology in the late 1960’s. Epilation by laser was performed experimentally for about twenty years before becoming commercially available in the mid 1990s. Hair removal lasers have been in use since 1997 and the Food and Drug Administration approved it for “permanent hair reduction.”

Laser hair removal is one of several light-based methods for removing hair. The efficacy of laser hair removal is now generally accepted in the dermatology community, and laser hair removal is widely practiced. Many reviews of laser hair removal methods, safety, and efficacy have been published in the dermatology literature.

How does laser hair removal work?

Lasers stop growth of hair from its roots by selectively targeting and heating dark target matter – melanin – in the area that causes hair growth – the follicle – while not damaging the rest of the skin. Light is absorbed by dark objects, so laser energy can be absorbed by dark material in the skin. Melanin occurs naturally in the skin: it gives skin and hair its color. There are two types of melanin in hair: eumelanin (which gives hair brown or black color) and pheomelanin (which gives hair blonde or red color).

Since lasers used for hair removal are designed to target the melanin in the hair, laser hair removal is usually most effective on people with light skin/dark hair combination. Melanin is what gives our hair and skin its color, so the darker it is, the more melanin you have.

To accommodate all skin types, additional laser technology had to be developed.

Today, there are several basic kinds of lasers that are commonly used for removing unwanted hair:

* Ruby Laser
* Alexandrite Laser
* Diode Laser
* Intense Pulsed Light Source
* ND:Yag Laser

Some technologies are more painful than others and some have more long-term effects than their counterparts. Ruby and Alexandrite lasers work best on people with light skin; the Diode laser can sometimes be effective on darker skinned people and the Nd:Yag works well on people with all complexions.

The newcomer to the laser market, the TRIA laser, is the first and only FDA cleared at-home laser for hair removal that enables users to achieve permanent laser hair removal in the privacy of their own home — eliminating the need to ever shave or wax again. TRIA laser was developed by the team of scientists that invented the professional technology in the 1993 . It uses that same laser technology to deliver the same permanent results as those professional devices, which are still considered the gold-standard among dermatologists and plastic surgeons.

Regardless of the type of laser used multiple treatments are necessary to achieve satisfactory results. Hair clearance, after repeated treatments, of 30 to 50% is generally reported 6 months after the last treatment. Patients with dark colored skin can be treated effectively with comparable results to those with lighter colored skin. Although there is no obvious advantage of one laser system over another in terms of treatment outcome (except the Nd:YAG laser, which is found to be less efficacious, but more suited to patients with darker colored skin), laser parameters may be important when choosing the ideal laser for a patient.

Is laser hair removal safe?

This procedure has been around for so long is that it has undergone a great deal of progress from where it first started out. As a result, you no longer have to be concerned about its safety. However if your complexion is dark, one of the possible laser hair removal side effects can be some scarring. That is why it is recommended having the doctor do a “test patch” in an area that can’t be seen and then determining if your skin reacts well.

If you’re considering laser hair removal, be an educated consumer and learn the facts. Ask what kind of technology will be used and whether it is appropriate for your skin type.

Generally, laser hair removal treatments work best on fair skinned people with dark hair, so if you have blond hair or dark skin, you may not be a good candidate. People who have very light colored skin and those with very dark colored skin are often not qualified for this type of treatment.

In recent years, however, new lasers have been developed to work with other skin and hair combination. They are now able to target dark black hair in patients with dark skin or light hair (blond or gray) in patients with dark skin. Some studies indicated that patients with tanned or dark skin can now achieve hair reduction equal to fair skinned patients without undesirable side effects.

You have to understand that different lasers have been developed for different skin and hair combinations, so you’ll need to find a clinic with laser that works best for your skin type and hair color. Because everyone’s skin is different so go for a consultation and have a test patch done.

Once you find the right clinic, your results will depend on:

Your hair type and skin type

How many sessions you have. Usually a complete treatment is 3-4 sessions, but you may need 5 or more with darker skin tones or light hair.

Your willingness to accept the fact that you may only achieve a 50% reduction in hair

The clinic investments in technology and new lasers.

The laser professional skill in working with laser technology. An experienced professional can make a difference when working with more difficult skin tones.

In special situations when laser hair removal is not recommended (because of certain medical conditions, for example, lupus or diabetes), you may be referred to an electrolysis practice or, if that’s not an option either, there are also some effective temporary hair removal treatments that you can do yourself at home.

Out of the various methods available, hair removal using waxing is one of the most popular. It is cheap, convenient (you can do it at home) and effective hair removal treatments. Almost any area of the body can be waxed, including eyebrows, face, bikini area, legs, arms, back, abdomen and feet. Waxing is a semi-permanent hair removal method, but because the hair is pulled out from the root, its effect lasts much longer than shaving. Typically, new hair will grow back in the previously waxed area within 2-8 weeks, though if waxing is done regularly for a several years, most people notice that their hairs become few and far between in the area they’re waxing.

How does waxing hair removal work?

Waxing is done by spreading a thin layer of wax over the skin. A cloth or paper strip is pressed over it and then ripped off with a swift movement, pulling away the wax along with the hair and leaving the skin smooth. There are a few different types of waxing treatment: hot wax is very effective at removing even thick and curly hair; cool wax can be a bit sticky and therefore not quite as effective, but is gentler to the skin. Sugaring sugaring is often considered as a form of waxing because the method is similar, but instead of using wax, a sticky, sugary paste is applied – however, it’s not hot and doesn’t stick to the skin as much as wax does.

During the procedure, the wax will be spread on your skin in small areas (larger areas if you’re having your legs, back or chest done), with a spatula. Then, a paper or cloth strip will be put on and ripped off in the opposite direction to your hair growth, removing the wax with the hair with it.

What is the difference between a hot wax and cold wax treatment?

Hot waxes melt just above body temperature so they can be spread in a thin layer over the hairy area. When they harden the hair gets trapped in the wax so it is pulled with the roots when the wax is ripped off. Cold waxes can be used on pre-coated strips which can be pressed directly onto the skin. The hair sticks to the wax and is then removed with by pulling it off in a rapid movement.

What is the effect of waxing on the skin?

A side benefit of waxing is that it removes dead skin cells and as a result the skin can feel quite smooth after the treatment. However waxing can be uncomfortable you may want to use a healing lotion or cream to soothe the skin. Other uncomfortable side effects include red bumps, and minor bleeding. This is more likely to occur when waxing areas with thick hair, especially the first few times when follicles are strongest.

What are the benefits of waxing versus other hair removal methods?

Hair waxing is an effective method to remove large amounts of hair at one time. It is a long-lasting method. Hair in waxed areas will not grow back for 2-8 weeks. When you shave or use a depilatory cream, the hair is removed at the surface rather leaving the root intact. After a few days, the hair starts to grow back, and is usually thick and strong. On the other hand, if waxing is used regularly, the hair that grows back tends to be much softer.

What are the drawbacks?

Let’s face it, waxing can be really painful when the strip is pulled from the skin. Although the pain is short-lasting, it can be very uncomfortable.

It is also not the cheapest option. It is usually performed by a licensed cosmetologist, and the cost can be very high. Some people claim that waxing is cheaper than laser hair removal, but we’re not sure how that is correct. Upfront costs of laser hair removal may be more, but having fewer visits throughout the first year and then only one each year thereafter helps in the long run.

There are do-it-yourself waxing supplies, but they may be difficult to use on oneself on some areas on the body. Also, hair removal with waxing is not permanent. When removed against the direction of hair growth, the wax strip may disturb hair follicles, causing hair to begin to grow in different directions, making it more noticeable. Fortunately, this risk is small if the waxing is performed properly.

What about ingrown hairs?

While usually impossible to eliminate, ingrown hairs can be reduced by regularly exfoliating, and applying an astringent or a solution of both astringent and oil (such as baby or azulene oil).

What about health precautions to keep in mind with waxing hair removal?

Some doctors do not recommend hair waxing for people with diabetes, varicose veins or poor circulation as they may be more prone to infection. If you take medications that tend to weaken the skin, such as acne medication Retin-A or Accutane, you will should not use hair wax on your face as tearing of the skin may occur when the wax is removed. Hair waxing should not be performed on skin affected by acne, lesions, pimples, moles or or on skin that is irritated or suffering from sunburn. You should not apply wax to peeling, broken skin or varicose veins. Never apply wax to the nipples when removing hair from the breast area.

Where can wax be used?

You should perform a skin test on a small area first, but generally waxing can be used safely on most parts of the body. The exceptions are nipples, the male genitals, inside the ears and nose, and eyelids.

What can be done to minimize the pain and discomfort?

An easy method to ease the discomfort is to press hard on the skin instantly after the waxing strip is ripped off. This should be done INSTANTLY after the strip is pulled off. Also, rubbing an ice cube over the area can reduce the risk of swelling and skin irritation. Many experienced beauticians recommend that women schedule waxing appointments for the week after menstruation, when pain tolerance is generally at its highest.

How much does it cost?

Do it at home kits typically cost between $30 and $80 for home use kits. Professional waxing $30-$200, depending on areas treated.

Is it for me?

If you have unwanted hair that you want to get rid of – be it on your legs, arms, chest, back, stomach, armpits, bikini line – then waxing offers a fast and convenient solution. You won’t get itchy re-growth as may be the case with shaving and hair will not grow back all at once. Of course, if your pain threshold is pretty low, you might want to try using wags on your legs first before you use it for bikini line or armpits – ouch!

Conclusion

Depending on your level of skin sensitivity or ability to tolerate pain, texture of hair and rate of hair growth, waxing hair removal may be a viable option for you. Check out a good supplier for a the latest waxing products.

Bikini line hair removal is something that a lot of women need to do on a regular basis. Although there are many bikini hair removal options out there, many of them still result in the same troublesome problem – hair growing back in the bikini line area. If frequent shaving or waxing in that spot bothers your skin, you might want to try to permanently get rid of your hair in that area with a couple of laser hair removal treatment sessions.

An important benefit of laser hair removal is the fact that, if performed correctly by an experienced professional, it is gentle and painless. You should be able to completely eradicate unwanted bikini line hair after just a few sessions, or at least have less or thinner hair in that area. This means that you will not need deal with your bikini hair on a ongoing basis.

The procedure is performed with a beam of high energy light that damages the hair follicles preventing them from growing hair. However, each session may not totally clear out the hair growing from the follicles but you will see reduced thickness of the hair after each session. Instead, multiple sessions are required to thin and disable the hair follicles.

The cost of each laser treatment session on your bikini line area is between 350 to 500 USD. How many treatments are needed varies from person to person, and depends on thickness of your hair, color of your hair and skin tone. Most people will need around three or four laser removal treatments before they will see permanent results.

Laser hair removal side effects are rare and usually only temporary. A small percentage of people develop darker or lighter shades of skin in the area that was treated with laser. This usually occurs on people with dark skin tones. The other known side effect is blistering and burning of the skin, however this can be prevented if the doctor used his laser tool correctly. Most of the problems associated with laser hair removal are caused by the person performing the treatment, therefore, it is imperative that you select an experienced and trustworthy professional.
